Purpose

The Chemical Handler is responsible for the safe handling, preparation, and dosing of chemicals used in the water treatment process to ensure the production of potable water that meets regulatory standards. The role involves monitoring chemical inventory, ensuring correct dosing procedures, and maintaining safety protocols to protect personnel and the environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive, store, and manage chemicals used in the water treatment process, ensuring proper labeling and storage conditions.
  • Prepare and mix chemical solutions according to prescribed formulations and dosing requirements.
  • Accurately dose and apply chemicals such as coagulants, disinfectants, and pH adjusters as per the guidance of the Water Quality Assurance unit.
  • Monitor chemical levels and usage rates to ensure consistent water treatment operations.
  • Maintain a log of chemical inventory, reporting low stock levels to the supervisor for timely replenishment.
  • Conduct routine inspections of chemical dosing systems and report any malfunctions or leaks.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of chemical containers and residues in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist in calibrating chemical dosing pumps and other related equipment.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety procedures, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures in case of chemical spills or other hazardous situations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in chemical storage and handling areas.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • HND/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in water treatment plant operations.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
