Subsidiary: Southern Water Company (SWC)

Purpose

The Quality Assurance Technician is responsible for conducting routine and specialized water quality testing and analysis to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This role supports the monitoring of raw and treated water, distribution pipelines, and treatment processes to maintain high-quality potable water. The technician will also support the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability in water quality data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • 1. Water Quality Testing and Analysis
    • Conduct routine and specialized testing of raw, treated, and distributed water to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.
    • Monitor and analyze key water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, chlorine levels, alkalinity, hardness, and microbial content.
    • Support the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory testing and field sampling.

2. Laboratory Operations and Equipment Maintenance

    • Maintain and operate laboratory instruments, including spectrophotometers, pH meters, turbidity meters, and colorimeters.
    • Conduct periodic calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy.
    • Prepare chemical reagents and standard solutions for testing procedures.

3. Compliance and Reporting

    • Ensure adherence to water quality regulations set by the Ghana Standards Authority, Water Resources Commission, PURC, and Environmental Protection Agency.
    • Maintain accurate records of water quality test results and report anomalies to the Quality Assurance Supervisor.
    • Assist in compiling and submitting regulatory and internal water quality reports.

4. Water Quality Assurance and Control

    • Perform quality control checks at various stages of water treatment, including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
    • Implement corrective measures when water quality deviations are detected.
    • Support risk assessment and hazard identification in water treatment processes.

5. Data Management and Trend Analysis

    • Collect, analyze, and interpret water quality data to identify trends and potential issues.
    • Utilize software tools for data recording and visualization to support decision-making.
    • Provide recommendations for process adjustments based on data analysis.

6. Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance

    • Follow strict safety protocols in handling chemicals and laboratory equipment.
    • Ensure environmental compliance in wastewater and sludge management.
    • Participate in safety drills and emergency response training.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • HND or bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Environmental Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in water quality assurance, laboratory analysis, or a similar role.
  • Experience with regulatory water testing protocols and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory results and recommend corrective actions.
  • Certification in water quality management, laboratory techniques, or safety compliance is an advantage.
