Purpose

The Plant Operator (Intake) is responsible for overseeing and managing the intake of raw water from sources such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The role ensures optimal operation of intake pumps and screens while maintaining compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control the intake of raw water, ensuring stable and adequate supply to the treatment plant.
  • Operate and maintain intake pumps, screens, and pipelines.
  • Monitor water levels, flow rates, and raw water quality parameters.
  • Conduct regular inspections of intake structures and report any anomalies.
  • Ensure removal of debris, silt, and aquatic vegetation from intake structures.
  • Adjust intake operations based on weather conditions, water demand, and raw water quality.
  • Record and report intake operation data, including pump run times and water levels.
  • Coordinate with Water Quality Assurance personnel for sampling and testing raw water.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental regulations related to raw water abstraction.
  • Support maintenance activities and assist in troubleshooting intake-related issues.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • HND/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in water treatment plant operations.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
