Summary of Role

The post holder is responsible for the operational, clinical, and financial management of the allocated

nursing unit. She will function as an expert clinical practitioner, to deliver direct patient care whilst

managing, leading, co-ordinating and overseeing nursing practice in compliance with the hospital goals

and values. The post holder carries 24-hour continuing responsibility for the coordination and

monitoring of all clinical activities within their designated clinical area, collaborating with physicians and

multidisciplinary team members and providing physical and psychological support to patients and their

families. She will be accountable for the management of resources and performance of staff, and

responsible and accountable for the Finance and Human Resources issues directly related to the unit.

She is expected to possess sound and contemporary knowledge of the area of the specialty, together

with an advanced understanding of professional nursing and quality health care delivery. She will

primarily work Monday to Friday office hours, but will participate in out-of-hours working to support

service delivery as required, and to act in the absence of the Nursing Director on designated weekends. This

will be rostered into the total hours worked per month. She will be responsible to the Nursing Director for

clinical guidance, professional line management, work review, and formal appraisal of performance.

Nursing Care

       i.          Provides a clear focus for clinical leadership and is responsible for ensuring the provision of a high standard of holistic, patient-centred care.

     ii.          Collaborate with multidisciplinary team and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care delivery.

    iii.          Ensure that patients in the medical ward receive compassionate and high-quality care.

   iv.          Monitor patient conditions, administer treatments, and coordinate care plans.

     v.          Oversee specialized procedures and interventions, such as wound care and post-operative care.

   vi.          Monitor patient outcomes and quality indicators to drive continuous improvement in care delivery.

  vii.          Directs the delivery of safe and appropriate patient care governed by evidence-based clinical and management practice.

viii.          Oversee the coordination of patient care activities within the Medical/ VVIP unit, ensuring adherence to established protocols and guidelines.

   ix.          Ensures that all required nursing processes and standards are maintained by nursing staff.

     x.          Practises clinically, leading, co-ordinating, and supervising nursing practice.

   xi.          Ensures that all patients have their needs assessed, that programmes of care are developed to meet these needs and are delivered in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.

  xii.          Leads innovation and demonstrates clinical expertise, acting as a resource and advisor in their area of expertise to colleagues in other units and departments throughout the hospital.

xiii.          Provides leadership in clinical situations, and acts as an influential role model for best competent professional nursing practice.

xiv.          Ensures that the health status of each patient and family is assessed as outlined in the standards of nursing practices by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.

Ward Rounds

Schedule and coordinate regular ward rounds with the medical team, including surgeons, nurses, and other relevant healthcare professionals.

Ensure that rounds are conducted at consistent intervals and follow a structured approach.

Human Resource Management

       i.          Accomplishes the unit’s human resource objectives by recruiting, orienting, scheduling, coaching, counselling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; and enforcing policies and procedures.

     ii.          Ensures meticulous attention to professional image (uniform code, hair and nails, name badges).

    iii.          Accountable to the Nursing Director for continuing nursing education of staff and education of trainees.

   iv.          Assesses knowledge, skills, and attitudes of personnel and identifies learning needs for in-service education.

     v.          Keeps records, monitors, and analyses all staff training, the results of nursing and quality audits conducted in the unit/department, as well as workshops, seminars, and meetings attended by or organised for staff development.

   vi.          Creates a work environment of professional practice by encouraging innovation and collaboration; actualising human caring; eliciting a commitment to excellence; demonstrating a respect for diversity; researching and developing nursing care practice trends.

Financial Resources Management

       i.          Meets unit objectives by estimating empathy and care requirements; scheduling expenditures; analysing variances; initiating corrective actions.

     ii.          Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue, and/or expense budgets.

    iii.          Researches, evaluates, selects, and implements systems which improve the efficiency of work unit operations.

   iv.          Responds to changes in the business that may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.

     v.          Controls, monitors, and analyzes pharmaceutical and surgical stock held in the units.

   vi.          Inventory management: Places requests for items from Medical and Surgical Stores through Medinous.

  vii.          Maintenance of items on Medinous: Liaises with Procurement and Billing Units to ensure that items on hand are physically identical to quantities on Medinous every week.

viii.          Ensures Transfers from one location to another are completed on Medinous as they occur.

   ix.          Ensure all Returns to Medical and Surgical Stores are captured on Medinous as they occur.

     x.          Determines minimum and maximum quantities to avoid over- or understock of items.

   xi.          Actively participates in stock take at the end of each month and ensures variance reports are completed promptly.

  xii.          Laises with the Procurement Unit to train nursing staff on stock management.

xiii.          Billing Charges on Medinous: Timely completion of all billing, ensuring all stock is accurately billed by nursing staff and reviewed promptly.

xiv.          Liaises with the Billing team before patient discharge from units.

Customer Relationship Management – External and Internal Stakeholders

       i.          Ascertains doctors’ preferences and ensures required equipment, surgical items, and protocols are in place.

     ii.          Assumes accountability for customer satisfaction, process indicators, quality improvement plans, and outcomes in the work unit.

    iii.          Collaborates with members of the multi-disciplinary health teams, organizations, and special interest groups and participates in decision-making about health care delivery.

   iv.          Participates in peer review based on the agreed-upon quality assurance monitoring indicators and tools.

     v.          Maintains patient relations by facilitating open channels of communication with patients, their families, other departments, physicians, and ancillary personnel, resolving patient and visitor complaints and/or channelling them to the appropriate department for solution.

   vi.          Identifies future nursing services requirements by establishing rapport across interdisciplinary teams

  vii.          services.

Clinical Governance and Risk Management

       i.          Identify and escalate clinical risks timeously.

     ii.          Participate in risk assessments and compile action plans to mitigate the identified risks.

    iii.          Ensures the awareness, compliance, and adherence to the relevant acts/prescripts applicable

   iv.          within the environment.

     v.          Advocates for the rights of patients/clients.

Medico-Legal and Safety

       i.          Practices within own scope, skills, and level of training.

     ii.          Prevents risks as far as possible.

    iii.          Maintains a safe working environment in accordance with the Occupational and Safety Policy

   iv.          Guidelines for Healthcare Workers.

     v.          Reports unsafe conditions to the Nursing Director.

Continuous Quality Improvement

       i.          Contributes to the ongoing research, development, and review of best practice in the specialty

     ii.          driving forward evidence-based practice.

    iii.          Develop, implement, and enforce medical ward-specific policies and procedures in compliance

   iv.          with healthcare regulations.

     v.          Stay current with best practices and medical-surgical nursing guidelines.

   vi.          Takes responsibility for the clinical supervision of staff and the policies and practices that

  vii.          operate within their clinical area.

viii.          Influences, motivates, develops, and leads the team to ensure quality and productive clinical

   ix.          and professional nursing care.

Limits of Authority

       i.          Operates within determined limits of authority in the achievement of the strategic plan and any other agreed goals and objectives of the hospital.

Health and Safety Obligations

       i.          Ensure own safety as well as the safety of patients, relatives, and junior staff by reporting any

accidents, risk assessments, or incidents, and completing all necessary paperwork.

Skills and Competency

       i.          Minimum 5 years proven leadership and management experience in the relevant environment

     ii.          preferably in private healthcare.

    iii.          Computer literacy.

   iv.          Understanding of legislation and regulations relating to healthcare and the nursing profession

     v.          Understanding of legal requirements as they relate to private hospitals and nursing.

   vi.          Understanding of resourcing models within the broader healthcare industry.

  vii.          Ability to influence, motivate, develop, and lead a team to ensure quality and productive clinical and

viii.          professional nursing care.

Educational and Professional Qualification

       i.          Bachelor of Science / Masters Degree in Nursing.

     ii.          Post-graduate Diploma in Nursing Management and/or Nursing Education is an advantage.

    iii.          Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
